Priorities

Human Capital – we need to be aggressive in our efforts to increase the pool of cardiologists available in the Jamaican healthcare sector. Currently there is only one cardiologist in the public sector serving a population of 2.7 million citizens. There is only 1 pediatric cardiologists in the public sector. We therefore propose to undergird the efforts of the health Ministry in attracting and retaining talent to increase the pool of skilled cardiologists.

Paediatric Cardiologist As Jamaica does not have a Board Certified Cardiologist that can attend to the cardiovascular needs of our paediatric heart patients, it would behove us to move quickly to raise the funds that will bring someone with that expertise here. That paediatric cardiologist would then rotate to the various public hospitals throughout the Island. We are anticipating that the cost of administering the program (salaries, support staff, equipment and supplies, transportation, etc.) will be approximately US$300,000 per year.

Adult Cardiologists – We will focus efforts on recruiting adult cardiologists based at the institute and will propose to have them contribute to covering clinics at public facilities in rotation
